Step 4: Funding and ordering

Background

Step Description: After a wheelchair and cushion are prescribed, funding needs to be secured for the service to be able to order the prescribed wheelchair and cushion. Each context will have different ways of funding and obtaining the wheelchair and cushion.
Planning considerations: This step might not need to be taught in-depth in your context (e.g. does not pertain to your profession). Consider available options/systems according to the context/country (how the user that is being assessed for the new wheelchair is going to get the new wheelchair. There are many options for example out-of-pocket, selected from available inventory, or through a public program. Similar to the considerations in the referral step, in the same context, different situations may apply for funding/ordering (e.g. military, children, older adults).
Location/Facilities: In-person or virtual classroom.
Human resource: An educator that is aware of the different funding and ordering approaches available in the context.
How to teach the content:
  • Lecture: Each context will need to create its own  according to local laws, product availability as well as procurement processes.
  • Case studies.
Equipment and Tools: Not applicable.
Documentation:
  • Local funding and/or ordering form.
  • Local supplier wheelchair/cushion ordering form, if applicable.
Other comments related to contextual adaptation/implementation: It is better to give the freedom to the lecturer to explain the students’ best matching process according to the own context of the relevant country/region.  Also, the lecturer should have the chance to explain other methods internationally available if wanted to teach / if time permits.

Objectives

Learning Objective

Demonstrate the ability to make use of multiple types of ordering processes for varying contexts.

How to Teach

Frontal lecture or online module about the locally available options for funding, locally available wheelchairs, and procurement processes. If ordering processes do not exist, consider alternative ordering processes with examples being provided.
Case studies.

How to Evaluate

Formal (test) or informal assessment (quiz).
Evaluation of the case studies (could be peer reviewed).

Learning Objective

Prepare an estimated wheelchair and cushion cost.

How to Teach

Frontal lecture or online module covering the costs of procuring a variety of wheelchairs, accessories, and seating options (can be integrated into prescription modules).

How to Evaluate

Students are given a scenario/case study and need to determine the total cost for the procurement of the wheelchair and accessories.
Peer-reviewed assessment.

Learning Objective

Assist an expert to draw up a technical data sheet and estimate cost.

How to Teach

Frontal lecture or online module which demonstrates how technical data sheets are drawn up and used to estimate costs.

How to Evaluate

Product ordering and funding forms evaluation.

Learning Objective

Independently prepare a technical data sheet and documentation to obtain the wheelchair.

How to Teach

Frontal lecture or online module which demonstrates how technical data sheets are drawn up and used to estimate costs.

How to Evaluate

Product ordering and funding forms evaluation.

Learning Objective

Develop solutions and find alternatives for wheelchair provision by facing different stakeholders.

How to Teach

Case studies that highlight complex situations are analyzed and proposed solutions and alternatives are debated to reach consensus.

How to Evaluate

Group work to analyze and find the best solution per case study.
